In 2019, visitors to the Gamescom gaming trade fair in Cologne, Germany had the chance to try out the latest version of Dragon Ball Z Kakarot. The popular video game franchise drew in crowds eager to experience the newest features and gameplay elements. Meanwhile, in Saudi Arabia, plans were underway for the development of the first-ever Dragon Ball Z theme park. This 5.3 million square foot entertainment venue was part of the kingdom’s Qiddiya project, a massive undertaking aimed at enhancing tourism and diversifying the economy.

The Dragon Ball Z theme park would consist of seven different areas inspired by locations from the original anime series. With over 30 themed rides, including five world-first attractions, visitors could immerse themselves in the world of Dragon Ball Z like never before. One standout ride, the Shenron roller coaster, would soar to heights of 230 feet, providing an exhilarating experience for thrill-seekers.

In addition to the theme park, a collaboration between Japan-based manga producer Toei Animation and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s foundation, MiSK, was set to create anime movies that would captivate audiences worldwide. The kingdom’s investment in video games and anime reflected a growing interest in these forms of entertainment.
