Examining Important Health Screenings Every Man Should Get

Prostate Cancer Survivor Advocates for Men’s Health Month: Early Detection and Personalized Care.

Men’s Health Month is a month-long celebration held in June to increase awareness about the importance of men taking care of their health. One man who has firsthand experience with the importance of health screenings is James Williams Jr., a two-time prostate cancer survivor. At the age of 39, despite being in great shape and running marathons, Williams was urged by his late wife to get a prostate screening as part of his annual physical. Despite receiving conflicting advice from doctors, he finally found a specialist who diagnosed him with prostate cancer.

Williams now advocates for men aged 45 and older to get screened for prostate cancer, as well as other important screenings such as colonoscopies, diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease. Dr. Stuart Bell, a primary care doctor and medical director, emphasizes the importance of personalized care and shared decision-making when it comes to screenings. He recommends men to start getting prostate and colon screenings by the age of 45, or earlier if there is a family history of these diseases.

Dr. Bell also mentions the importance of being aware of testicular cancer for younger men and lung cancer for smokers. By making informed decisions about screenings and maintaining regular check-ups, men can significantly impact their health and well-being. Men’s Health Month aims to empower men to take charge of their health and lead healthier lives through promoting preventive care and early detection.
