NFL Approves Significant Rule Changes for 2021: New Enforcement on Offensive Fouls and Additional Challenge Opportunities

The NFL has approved a ban on hip-drop tackles as the headline of this year’s league meeting. However, another significant change was also approved by the league, which relates to how fouls are enforced on plays resulting in a change of possession.

The Competition Committee put forth a proposal that would allow penalties for major offensive fouls, such as unnecessary roughness, to be enforced on plays when there are fouls committed by both teams before the change of possession. This change was suggested to ensure consistency in enforcing all major fouls.

On Monday, the NFL announced that the proposal was approved by a vote of team owners. In order for a change to be added to the rulebook, two-thirds of the teams in the league must approve it.

Furthermore, the league also approved a proposal that would allow teams a third challenge if either of their first two challenges is successful. This change aims to give teams more opportunities to challenge calls and ensure fair play on the field.
