Girls Flag Football Soars in Denver: The Denver Broncos Foundation and CHSAA Partner to Launch State’s First Girls Flag Football Program

The Denver Broncos Foundation, in partnership with the Colorado High School Athletic Association (CHSAA), launched the state’s pilot program for girls flag football in 2021. The program, which was funded by the Broncos and CHSAA, included 50 schools, 10 school districts, and nearly 1,500 girls who played in almost 850 games.

In its second year, the program experienced a significant increase in participation, with the number of participants (1,316) and games (680) growing by 161 percent and 310 percent respectively. CHSAA Commissioner Mike Krueger expressed his excitement about the program’s growth and impact on promoting empowerment, teamwork, and breaking barriers for female athletes.

The Denver Broncos have been consistent supporters of the pilot program since its launch. In the past two seasons, they have hosted the championship tournament and a round-robin exhibition event at their Centura Health Training Center. Members of Broncos leadership and players have attended these events to show their backing for the sport.

With the official sanctioning of girls flag football by CHSAA, the Denver Broncos Foundation will continue to support seasonal programming for girls flag football through coaching clinics, athlete recognition programs, youth health and wellness initiatives. The foundation aims to cultivate leadership skills, confidence building and promote equality for female athletes while inspiring a new era of inclusivity and self-empowerment among young women in Colorado.
