Devastating Earthquake Rocks Taiwan: 9 Dead, Over 900 Injured in Strongest Quake in 25 Years

On Wednesday morning, the east coast of Taiwan was hit by a powerful earthquake that caused at least nine deaths and more than 900 injuries. The quake, which was the strongest in 25 years, left buildings in ruins, caused power outages and triggered landslides. As a result of the earthquake, tsunami warnings were issued for southern Japan and the Philippines.

The magnitude of the earthquake was reported differently by Taiwanese officials and the U.S. Geological Survey. While Taiwanese officials registered it as having a magnitude of 7.2, the U.S. Geological Survey recorded it as having a magnitude of 7.4. The quake struck southwest of Hualien City at 7:58 a.m. local time, followed by powerful aftershocks.

Despite being hit by a strong earthquake, Taiwan’s buildings are designed to withstand such events and its population is well-drilled for emergency response due to frequent earthquakes on the island caused by its location along the Pacific Ocean’s “Ring of Fire.” Tectonic plates converge and interact there causing seismic activity which generates reverse faults that lift one plate above the other resulting in about 2000 earthquakes of magnitude 4 or greater since 1980 on average every year . The deadliest earthquake in Taiwan’s recent history was the magnitude 7.7 Chi-Chi quake of
