Baseball’s Mental Health Director: Deanna Nobleza Helping Players Reach Their Full Potential

Dr. Deanna Nobleza, the mental health director for the Philadelphia Phillies, has made it her mission to help players and coaches navigate the highs and lows of baseball. She understands that mental health is just as important as physical health in the demanding lifestyle of professional baseball, which includes long travel schedules and time away from families.

Nobleza was pleasantly surprised by the players’ willingness to be open to mental health initiatives and seek help in her second season with the team. Although she doesn’t share specifics about her sessions, she acknowledges that dealing with pressure is a common topic among players. She sees Philadelphia as an ideal location to practice managing stress, given its fast-paced environment.

Beyond wins and losses, Nobleza hopes to inspire other women to pursue careers in mental health and make a positive impact on the field. She believes that seeking help is a courageous step towards improving performance both on and off the field. Nobleza sees asking for help as a sign of strength and hopes that her work will encourage others to seek mental health care. By normalizing mental health care, she aims to support players in reaching their full potential and achieving well-being.
