Austrian Airlines Faces Potential Strike Threat by On-Board Staff: Tensions High as Union and Airline Negotiations Falter

Austrian Airlines faces a potential strike threat by its on-board staff this week, with at least 3,500 employees involved. Collective agreement negotiations ended without a resolution on Sunday, and no talks took place on Monday. However, both parties have indicated a willingness to continue discussions.

Unionist Daniel Liebhart of the vida union has stated that the union is prepared to negotiate at any time and has even set aside a room for negotiations at the ÖGB. The union has emphasized the importance of financial numbers in their offer to Austrian Airlines.

On Monday, AUA spokeswoman Sophie Matkovits mentioned that the airline is eager to discuss its offer but requires a significant movement from the union. Matkovits added that a decision regarding flight cancellations due to the strike threat will be made on Tuesday. The potential cancellation of approximately 430 flights for 52,000 passengers could cost the airline 15 million euros. Austrian Airlines is already offering potentially affected customers the option to rebook or cancel their flights free of charge if necessary.

In case of flight cancellations, Austrian Airlines must provide replacement transportation to passengers, which could involve flights with other airlines, train or bus journeys or compensation for those unable to find alternatives. Both sides are open to further discussions to reach a resolution despite the looming strike threat.

The stake in negotiations is high for both sides as the union seeks better financial terms while Austrian Airlines calculates offers based on inflation and one-off payments. If the strike goes ahead, it will have far-reaching consequences not only for Austrian Airlines but also for thousands of passengers who will be affected by flight cancellations.

As tensions rise between Austrian Airlines and its on-board staff, both parties must come together quickly to avoid further escalation of tensions and ultimately reach an agreement before it’s too late.
